New research in “The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism” establishes that high body mass index and high blood pressure are direct causes of dementia.Ruth Frikke-Schmidt led the study of 500,000 participants in Denmark and the United Kingdom using Mendelian randomization to rule out lifestyle factors.Findings suggest that managing weight and hypertension early in life can prevent brain damage while noting that low body mass index may be a disease symptom.
