X Corp., owned by Elon Musk, sued Operation Bluebird this week, saying the startup is brazenly attempting to steal the Twitter trademarks after Bluebird petitioned the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to cancel X’s rights and began taking reservations for handles on a site called Twitter.new.X argues the rebrand to X did not abandon the marks, noting millions still access the service through twitter.com and asking a court to block Bluebird’s application, stop its use of Twitter-like branding, and award damages; Operation Bluebird cofounder Stephen Coates says the cancellation petition is based on well-established trademark law and trademark attorney Josh Gerben said X could have defended the challenge administratively but clearly is not ready to let the brand go.
