Donald Trump signed an executive order at the White House recently that designates illicit fentanyl and the precursor chemicals used to make it as a weapon of mass destruction and he said, "no bomb does what this drug does."The order defines illicit fentanyl under the Controlled Substances Act, excludes legally prescribed medical fentanyl, directs the Department of Defense and the Department of Justice to review additional national security roles and orders Attorney General Pam Bondi to bring charges immediately and seek tougher penalties in trafficking cases.Critics warned the designation could change prosecution and diplomatic approaches, prompt legal challenges and divert resources from prevention, treatment and harm reduction even as the administration pursues maritime strikes and diplomacy with partners over precursor chemicals.
