Narges Mohammadi, a Nobel Prize laureate and prominent Iranian human rights activist, was violently re-arrested in Mashhad while attending a memorial for late lawyer Khosrow Alikordi, who recently died in suspicious circumstances. Witnesses and relatives say Mohammadi, briefly released for medical treatment in December 2024, refused to wear a mandatory headscarf, led chants for executed protester Majidreza Rahnavard, and was dragged away by security forces who also detained dozens of other activists. Her family, including husband Taghi Rahmani and brother Hamid Reza Mohammadi, and the Narges Foundation report they have had no contact with her for 48 hours and fear for her health amid what they describe as an intensified crackdown on dissent by the Islamic Republic.
