Iranian authorities are refusing an independent medical examination for Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi after her violent arrest at a memorial for Khosrow Alikordi earlier this week. Her family and support committee say she was beaten during the arrest, suffered bruises to her neck and face, and was taken to a hospital emergency room twice by prison authorities; Hamid Mohammadi said relatives were denied permission to arrange an independent doctor and that she sounded unwell on a brief phone call.Amnesty International accused Iran's security forces of torture and other ill-treatment, human-rights groups and public figures including Jafar Panahi and the Norwegian Nobel Committee have called for independent medical checks, transparency and her release on health grounds, while Iranian prosecutors have accused Mohammadi of making provocative comments and say 39 people were arrested in connection with the events.
