Donald Trump ordered U.S. authorities to halt all pending asylum applications from nationals of 19 high-risk countries, including Afghanistan, following the arrest and indictment of Rahmanullah Lakanwal for shooting two National Guard members near the White House. The attack killed Sarah Beckstrom and critically injured Andrew Wolfe, while Lakanwal was hospitalized, pleaded not guilty, and now faces murder and assault charges.Trump's new policy also instructed USCIS to review immigration benefits since January 2021, with authorities such as ICE accelerating deportations and critics like George Packer and organizations such as the UN condemning the measures as discriminatory.
