Judge Richard J. Leon denied the National Trust's request to temporarily halt construction of a new White House ballroom but barred crews from building below-ground structures for two weeks and ordered plans submitted to the National Capital Planning Commission by the end of the year, after preservationists filed suit over demolition and alleged failures in required reviews. The National Trust says the administration demolished much of the roughly 120-year-old East Wing without completing historic and environmental reviews and cited five violated laws, while the National Park Service's assessment said the project will have important visual effects but no significant impact and estimates completion in summer 2028.The Justice Department argued courts have limited authority to review decisions of the Executive Office, said initial outreach to the commission has begun and warned no final design exists, while Representative Jamie Raskin plans legislation to require historic reviews before ground is broken.
