An investment platform has been set up with the European Investment Bank to mobilise funds, and EU Commissioner Dan Jørgensen addressed the housing crisis that leaves nearly one million people homeless following the European Commission's unveiling of a comprehensive Affordable Housing Plan. The plan aims to add about 650,000 affordable dwellings a year on top of existing construction to reach roughly 1.6 million new homes annually and estimates an additional €150 billion per year in public and private investment will be needed to close the gap.It proposes at least €11.5 billion from the EU budget on top of about €43 billion already identified, expects national and regional banks to help mobilise roughly €375 billion by 2029, and includes draft legislation to give local authorities clearer powers over short-term rentals while drawing criticism from housing advocates who warn the package relies too heavily on private delivery.
