The USTR posted on X warning it will respond if the European Union and some member states continue what it called “discriminatory and harassing” lawsuits, taxes, fines and directives, after Washington had repeatedly criticised EU digital rules for disadvantaging U.S. firms. The post said U.S. services represent more than $100 billion in direct investment in Europe and warned U.S. law allows the assessment of fees or restrictions on foreign services; the
European Commission, through
Thomas Regnier, replied that EU rules apply equally and will continue to be enforced fairly.
